UMD technology... dead

Wow, that was quite shocking and I'm surprised I didn't realised before. Just found this article where you can see how the UMD technology (you know, those CDs wrapped in a white plastic) that PSP uses.

The thing is that PSP also supports a memory stick, and at this point the memory sticks have more capacity than those little shitty CDs. So, as the memory stick is a technology that is not stopping will keep getting bigger and bigger, so what's the point of keeping those CDs? What about releasing your game in a memory stick? Then we will end up with a game portable which doesn't use 20% of itself (UMD reader). Which makes me think that Sony would probably redesign it and do it lighter... I guess.

Poor thing.. it only had 2 years of life :) Not too many technologies had such a short life.

Comment feature is back...
Sorry about that but I had to stop the feature. I was getting 100+ spams a day. Hope with this "new" system I can stand for a bit longer.

So, feel free to write comments again :)

Rar & unrar with Ubuntu
Yesterday I found something that was a bit tricky with ubuntu. I downloaded some stuff that was compressed in a .rar file and when I was looking for a program that was able to handle the files I found Ark and Xarchiver. Two "goo enough" tools that aparently were able to do the job. However they cann't handle the files like out-of-the-box. You need to install manually rar and unrar. After searching internet and following some solutions with unrar-free and things like that I tried something that was even easier.

1. Install Ark / Xarchiver
2. Download the latest version of RAR (now is RAR 3.60 beta 6).
3. Uncompress the file anywhere.
4. Open a Terminal and do this:

cd /usr/bin
cp /wherever/you/uncompressed/
the/files/rar .
cp /wherever/you/uncompressed/the/files/unrar .

That's it! Enjoy!

UPDATE!!
( 26 / 10 / 07 )
Nowadays it's much more simple than that:

1. Open a console
2. sudo apt-get install rar
3. sudo apt-get install unrar

... and back from Formentera!

Well, it's over.. I have to say that was very relaxing and inspiring (2 new projects in mind now :D).

But also it was a bit unlucky... the first day i went inside the water with my mobile on a pocket (bye bye dear!), the sim card is completelly rusty but somehow is still working but I lost all the numbers I had in the mobile. I also had to learn to drive with a motorcycle in minutes (tho it ended up being quite funny). And as the last bit, we lost the plane.. so well, we had to pay for new plane tickets and well, we arrived 1hour ago... and in 1hour I should go work... arf...

UPDATED
Here you have a selection of the 400+ pictures that we did there.

World Cup!
Yeah baby! The wold cup is here! I don't know why but I feel very motivated when I see thousands of people losing 1:45 of time of their time, and I can use that time to create/design/code/produce something. It's like doing running in a marathon and being 1:45 minutes ahead thousand of runners. It's also like all the people that watch TV and TV shows... but as it's a little bit more random I don't get that much motivated.

But thinking about it again, I got mixed feelings, I also feel sad about all those people losing that time and also giving money to the world cup organizers. Hey! everything in this world is about money, so If the organizers of the World Cup and also of all the leagues can make that thousand of people follow the cup and see all the ADs and also pay for World Cup tickets to watch some people kicking a ball.. It's a good business! I wish I was one of the organizers! Also I feel bad because, what are they going to learn? nothing.. maybe the first time or the second time they watch a match they can learn the rules, some tricks and that's all, the rest is just time lost.

Ok maybe they need that kind of entertaiment, they need to do that activity to feel better, that sounds like going to church to me :)

Next time someone asks me the usual question of "how did managed to do what you did with only 23 years?" I'll answer "Without watching TVshows and without following Football!"

hehehe...

PS: Uh, but don't get me wrong... I'm following the World Cup slighly, I don't need to watch the action, I just got that World Cup module in my netvibes which I check from time to time.

Paul, welcome to your computer

Is it just me or saying "XXX, welcome to your computer" sounds weird?
I can understand things like "XXX, welcome to Windows" or "XXX, welcome to the operating system"... I don't know, I just feel that my computer is MY computer, and MY computer will never welcome me. A computer is just a tool, it's like...

Hello Mr.Doob! Welcome to your rubber.
Hello Mr.Doob! Welcome to your Hammer.
Hello Mr.Doob! Welcome to your new brand TV.
Hello Mr.Doob! Welcome to your condom.
Hello Mr.Doob! Welcome to your CDburner.
Hello Mr.Doob! Welcome to your Graphics Card.
...
er...

Windows Vista Beta 2 goes public (for free). Why?
Because in order to download / request the DVD you NEED a Windows Live™ ID account, so you have to register for that.

Whatever they say.. it's basically a gay trick to get some users to spam and try to beat Google. Lame.

Bye bye Windows,...welcome Ubuntu!

Yeah! As I said before I was about to get rid of any illegal copy of Windows from here. If you don't need any special Windows program and you're running an illegal copy of Windows XP I recommend you to use a 2006 OS (not a 2001) such as Ubuntu 6.06. In that way, I guess Windows XP will move from 90% to 50% of expansion. Hehehe...

So, I spent almost the whole weekend installing Ubuntu and getting used to it. Some bits were a bit hard to configure (Apache+PHP+MySQL as we always have an internal webserver for testing reasons), but I was able to do it. Also, I lost a bit of time installing xGL+Compiz... Looks like it's not ready yet as it crashed after using it for a while. However, it's awesome!! :O

Some things I really liked were...

Installing the OS from the OS (liveCD)...
and being able to browse internet, chat or play a game meanwhile, oh! and it doesn't take 45min like Windows Vista does.

Auto-update system

it checks if there is any new package and installs it.

Installing new apps/services without opening firefox
there is a apps/services repositories searcher/browser were you can select what do you want to install and the tool will also install the additional services needed. So I installed Blender & inkscape, ... (both of them) with just 1 click. Can you imagine something like that in Windows XP? I don't.

Great help
In case I needed to learn any command line syntax, ubuntu guide was always there. (And sole, of course ;))

Visual beauty
In the other hand, one of the main worst points of Linux (ugliness) has been finally fixed. The login screen / system loading / skin / icons / screensavers are MUCH better than Windows XP (and you don't have to crack the system in order to add new skins if you wish). Click on the snapshot to see how everything looks like.

Good stuff already installed
OpenOffice, firefox, gimp, and programs like that were already installed.. (Again, imagine how long it will take to install Windows XP and Office X'D) However, I needed to install VLCplayer, MySQLAdmin and aMule.

So, yeah... after doing the migration I got a great feeling, it's like really using a clean and stable 2006 OS, instead a super-mega-patched 2001 one.

Safety Last!

After watching so many times Jackie Chan's movies, and watching his "My Life" one where he said why he did something and where did he get the inspiration from, I directly moved to 1920's and downloaded some movies from then. The first one I saw by now was Safety Last! by Harold Lloyd. It's very interesting to see how 50% of the gags we saw now on TV/movies were already done 80 years ago :O

Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy... ;)
